Red Carpet Hair: The Marvellous MOBO Awards

October 8th, 2009 by ant

The stars were out in force last night at the annual MOBO awards. The event always attracts the hippest artists in the world of soul, r n’ b and hip hop.

We check out the hair styles on the night. Who got it right and who looked a fright?

La Toya Jackson
“La Toya’s girly, autumnal, long curls soften her strong jaw line and the rich auburn colour complements her skin tone beautifully.

“For a more youthful feel, I think the cut could be taken up to shoulder length, giving it greater sophistication and extra glitzy glamour!”

Sabrina Washington
“Sabrina is the queen of changing her looks for dramatic affect.

”However, this style lacks balance and is too bulky, swamping Sabrina’s soft features.

“I think she would look fantastic with a short style and some warm chestnut and honey tones, to complement her beautiful complexion.”

Peter Andre
“Peter Andre’s short dark hair and manly unshaven look compliments his skin tone much more than the boyish blonde highlights he used to wear.

“If anything, Peter would look great with a short, dark crop but us girls at Reed Hair love him just the way he is!”

Alexandra Burke
“I love Alexandra’s new image now that it has been sharpened up with a bang-on-trend long graduated bob and a dramatic full blunt fringe.

“Coloured in deep violet tones, Alex looks hot, young and ready for any red carpet occasion. Watch this space, I think Alexandra will be surprising us with many more sizzling looks to come!”

Beverley Knight
“Beverley’s short, choppy and textured bob is a great style for her face shape and looks modern and fresh.

“I think that with some colour work, maybe deep reds and rich auburns, Beverley’s hair would look much glossier and well conditioned. It would also give her cut more definition. No matter what she does though, she always looks fantastic!”

Kelly Rowland
“The girl of forever changing hair styles looks wicked with these long, glossy and healthy looking tresses.

“Kelly is totally experimental with her locks and carries these vampy extensions with style and panache. Does she need another change for the future? Who knows, but by next month I’m sure she will be sporting another sexy look anyway!”

Beth Ditto’s Autumn Shades

October 8th, 2009 by garry

Not known for her understated style, Beth Ditto has recently embraced an array of bright Autumn hair shades to cheer up the gloomy weather.

Beth’s tangerine dream coloured bob popped up at the Mercury Awards along with punky, Toyahesque make-up.

She also recently sported a burnt orange shade which was curly on top and shorter at the sides – an 80s’ style reminiscent of Salt n Pepa in their glory days.

Sticking with the bright theme, the Gossip singer’s latest look is a hot red shade that is snipped into a pretty side-swept crop.

The orange-to-red transition has left Beth watchers guessing – and this latest hair colour is a bright red tone that is just as loud as Beth’s singing voice.

This very bold, bright colour is a very strong look that many couldn’t even attempt to carry off but it looks absolutely great on Beth.

Redheads always turn heads and Beth has gone for an extreme shade that matches her red lippy and warms up her cool skin tone. She might not be as demure as Lily Cole and Florence Welch but her bright style suits her brash image.

Beth is known in the industry for making a statement and having her voice heard, her hair is absolutely no exception. Not one to fade into the background, this colour makes it impossible. She looks fabulous

Kate Moss returns for Vogue UK, October 2009

September 27th, 2009 by gemma

Oh Kate Moss, how rarely we seem to see you these days. But no pictorial tribute to British fashion would be quite complete without you, would it?

Moss – pictured below in a leather corset, sheer top, and Union Jack flag – makes a brief appearance in ‘Cast & Crew’ in the October issue of Vogue UK, alongside Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, and Lily Donaldson.

Lily Allen topless for GQ, October 2009

September 14th, 2009 by ant

So far now from the ungainly teenager in big hoop earrings and trainers, Lily Allen has just cemented her place in GQ’s hall of fame; being named their ‘Woman Of The Year’ for 2009. The accompanying photoshoot sees Lily go topless again, as she did not so long ago for ID Magazine.

Lily’s normally sleek bob has been styled to look suspiciously like the Kristen Stewart mullet in some of these shots… but she carries it well, and we’re particularly loving the statement jewellery and long gloves used to accessories the otherwise minimal shoot.

Kate Moss: sensual for YSL

September 10th, 2009 by gemma

It’s been argued, some what fervently, that the party lifestyle has taken it’s toll on once-hypermodel Kate Moss. Be that as it may, a combination of a brilliant backing track, mood lighting, and more sexuality than you could point a stick at, make Moss’ ad campaign for Yves saint Laurent Parisienne a sensual stand out of the Autumn 2009 season.

Autumn Hair Colour Trends for Blondes, Brunettes and Redheads

September 8th, 2009 by nicole

As temperatures start to cool down, so will hair colour as we head into the autumn/winter season, with cooler, more sophisticated brunettes and blondes.  Small adjustments can help women update their look from season to season. When summer comes to a close, cool your client’s shades down – move towards blue or violet, such as platinum blondes, ash browns and plum reds.

So what should the three main colour types be looking for this autumn/winter? Here is a selection of the key looks for blondes, brunettes and redheads.

Blondes

The Trend: Lady Gaga and Agyness Deyn continue to have an influence. Blondes will be flat and beige or cool and icy. The honey, sun-kissed shades from spring/summer will migrate into wintry platinum shade.

Alternatives: Power blondes for autumn/winter 09 take their inspiration from the 80s. Blonde is bold; bright golds, champagne bondes, warm peachy tones and cinnamon beiges work as well as classic pearls and soft creams.

Style Icons: Drew Barrymore, Kate Moss and Paris Hilton

Brunettes

The Trend: Well maintained, expertly conditioned and rich with intense colour molecules, brunettes reflect the light and shine. Multi-tonal, striking all over colour in shades of walnut, teak, sable, mink and tawny tones give hair a fur-like sheen. Colour is luxurious, with glimmers of light catching pigments in rum, claret and brandy tones.

Alternatives: Rich and vibrant, but remaining classic, darker, sold shades will be popular in line with teh block colours we are currently seeing in fashion. All over tinted bases, darker lowlight or slices can be added to create interest while achieving a deep, glossy natural looking colour.

Style Icons: Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie and Eva Longoria

Redheads

The Trend: Reds are high-depth this season, light and sparkling, they are sun-kissed and coppery in tone. Organic shades of russet, coral, peach, strawberry bondes, terracotta, saffron and honey, these warm toned reds complement pale skins and look natural and uncontrived.

Alternatives: The autumn/winter redhead will be more sophisticated, and playful with their shade, with deep red tones adn a few cool, blonde highlights throughout. The red revival is strong but you need to be mindful that only certain skin tones can carry off the fiery, vivid tones. Bold, copper reds are best suited to pale, porcelain skin tones as seen on Coco Rocha and Lily Cole.

Style Icons: Lilly Cole, Julianne Moore and Lindsay Lohan

Chunky Knits: Women’s Fall/Autumn Fashion Trend

September 3rd, 2009 by gemma

While colour is often missing from the palette of fashion trends in the colder months, the same cannot be said for texture. As with the colder seasons of yesteryear, texture in the form of chunky knits will be a prevalent feature of Autumn 2009 / Fall 2009. However, as the world puts the economic down turn behind it, several fashion houses are banking on fashioniers being interested in taking their chunky knits to the level of an extreme sport: introducing super chunky knits.

There are several ways to wear chunky knits this season. Easiest, of course, is wearing the look as an accessory. Topshop Unique Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2009/2010 certainly took that to be the case, sending a knit scarf down the catwalk that was so extreme it might even look out of place on a couture catwalk. Made no less eye catching by its use of an unseasonal blue, those looking for something extreme that doesn’t verge on the ridiculous might instead turn to a chunky knit jumper.

The sweater / jumper look again featured on TopShop’s catwalk, and while extreme it did so in an interpretation of red better suited to a Winter wardrobe, though the oversized jumper dress from Missoni was more to our taste.

Those looking for an infusion of sex, however, can’t go past Julien MacDonald’s Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2009 / 2010 chunky knit dress offering. Again an extreme interpretation of the look, while it certainly features a mass of knitting perfect for the look it is the Winter interpretation of the cutaway fashion trend that makes this dress a must-have piece for a woman’s Autumn (Fall) 2009 wardrobe.

Lily Allen peroxide blonde for Elle Magazine

September 2nd, 2009 by nicole

Following in the footsteps of Kate Moss comes Lily Allen in her latest cover shoot for Elle magazine. Seemingly obsessed with fringed bobbed hairstyles, Lily’s peroxide blonde look is highly reminiscent of the one Kate Moss sported in Interview mag last year.

Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2009 / 2010 Fashion Trends

August 27th, 2009 by gemma

As the world slowly pulls itself out of an economic depression, the Autumn 2009 season will largely define what 2010 fashion will look like. From over the knee boots to capes and cloaks, our fashion trends guide for the colder months of 2009 and 2010 will help to keep your wardrobe sorted, and your looks on the cutting edge.

2009/2010 Clothing: Key Looks

Over-the-knee / Thigh-high Boots

Over-the-knee boots are the must-have item for Fall 2010; but those daring enough will find the tops of their boots creeping up even higher with thigh-high boots also making it mainstream. From elegant suedes to darkly futuristic wound-and-bound leathers, the options are many and various.

Capes, Capelets & Cloaks

It’s been quite some time since the cape has been a major fashion staple. In Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2010 the cape, in it’s various forms, will make it to major trend status as many big names of the fashion design world create their own unique revivals. From cropped mini capelets to long cloaks and full capes.

Ripped Tights & Stockings

Our wartime female counterparts would never have imagined this day; where laddered stockings are not only acceptable, but fashionable. The ripped stocking trend is a close cousin of the ripped denim trend, a step towards a new era of neo-Grunge.

See-through Clothing

In Spring/ Summer fashion tends to get a little more revealing; we blame it on the heat, and one’s desire to show off. So in 2010 turn to the see-through clothing fashion trend to keep you cool, yet sexy. 2010’s sheer pieces are a mixture of the soft and feminine, to the opposite extremes of the hardcore sex-kitten.

One-Shouldered Dresses & Tops

From single-shouldered dresses to tops and bikinis, asymmetric shoulder-lines have made a huge return in 2009. Showing off one-shoulder in a dress can be subtly sexy and interesting on the eye, and the possibilities for how to wear it are numerous.

Military Fashion

A close cousin of the bohemian luxe trend, the military jacket strikes back in 2009 as a winter wardrobe staple. Whether feminised, rocked up or worn with sexy androgyny, it’s a winner.

Ripped Jeans & Torn Denim

Just when you thought they would never return… ripped jeans are back. Starting in 2008 with a horde of sexed-up editorial shoots and celebrity sightings, those torn denim shorts and shredded jeans are hitting the streets. Ripped denim in 2009 is certainly sexy and revealing – possibly more than ever.

Colour Trends for 2009/2010 Autumn/Winter

Fashion colour trend analysis is a major influence in how many a designer approaches their new season collections, and while we’ve already seen all the catwalks from the major labels smaller clothes labels will still be looking for inspiration. And so will many of us. Pantone have made that easy with the release of their 2009 colour trends for Autumn guide.

Fashion Trends To Avoid in 2009/2010

Double denim fashion trend: just say no!

While we weren’t kind on the douche-bag neck 2009/2010 is the first seaon we’ll be running an ‘avoid this trend’ section for; and with good cause. You see there’s a lot of designers and celebrities trying to bring back history’s greatest fashion crime: double denim.

Agyness Deyn’s Chic Bob

August 25th, 2009 by ant

She’s been on the style map for some time but Agyness Deyn seems to be getting hipper by the minute.

She exploded onto the catwalks with her trademark, white-blonde crop a couple of years ago and her appeal just seems to be growing.

Agy’s original white-blonde 80s look  made her a household name but in recent months she’s sported a few dud do’s, so we’re glad to see that her beautiful, new soft bob and sweeping fringe has put her hair back on the style map.

Her hair horrors have included a scary backcombed style, a shampoo-and-set Marilyn Monroe (on a very bad day) ‘do and a few terrible roots disasters.

Miss Deyn isn’t known for her conventional lifestyle and was recently spotted riding her bike wearing a tiny dog in a shoulder sling. She’s also famous for her string of rock n’ roll boyfriends.

This new look is a slight step away from her usual disheveled rock chick style, with a soft finish that looks chic and sophisticated without looking boring.
